Best Surf Season (December - February)
The heart of the surf year at Paunch arrives when the North Atlantic high pressure system locks in and drives consistent NE trade-wind swell across the Caribbean. Paunch's east-facing layout loves swell that lines up from the east-northeast through southeast window (ONO/O/OSO/SO), and while the dominant NE swell sits just outside that ideal angle, it still pushes plenty of clean, rippable energy into the break. Average wave heights climb to 4-5ft (1.2-1.5m) with periods around 8-8.4s, while offshore WNW/NW winds blow 94-97% of the time. This is the most reliable, cleanest and most consistent stretch of the year.
Fair Surf Season (March - August & November)
From March through August, and again in November, the trade-wind belt remains active but the quality becomes more variable. Average swell heights slip to 3-4ft (0.9-1.2m) and periods sit mostly in the 7.4-8.4s range. July is a standout month with strong NE consistency and 93% ideal winds, while May and August are smaller and more affected by the rainy season. Local afternoon thunderstorms and a weaker pressure gradient create occasional wind-affected days, but there are still plenty of fun, rideable waves for those willing to read the daily forecasts.
Low Surf Season (September - October)
September and October are the low point of the year at Paunch. As the ITCZ shifts overhead and the North Atlantic high weakens, average swell heights bottom out around 2.3ft (0.7m) and average periods fall to 7.0-7.4s. Ideal offshore winds also drop to just 61-64%, so the surf is not only smaller but also more contaminated by variable, onshore winds. Expect longboard-friendly, groveling conditions and short, lumpy windows. If you want real waves, these are the months to skip.
