Best Surf Season (April - July)

April marks the true turning point at Playa Los Destiladeros. Average swell heights stay around 3-4ft (1.1m), but the period climbs into the powerful 13-14s range and the SSW swell window - the direction that fires straight into this south-facing beach - becomes the dominant source of energy. The wind machine also cleans up its act: ideal offshore flow from the N/NNE/NNW quadrant reaches 44% in April, 50% in May, 51% in June and 65% in July. The result is a long stretch of consistent, long-period SSW groundswell, groomed by offshore trade winds and delivered in warm 27-29°C water. This is the sweet spot for rippable, waist-to-shoulder-high waves with regular head-high sets mixed in.

Fair Surf Season (March, August - November)

March gives the first real taste of the south swell season as SSW energy jumps to 38% and periods reach 12.4s, but wind consistency is still building. From August through November the SSW swell window remains dominant, holding at 82-97% of all wave energy, which keeps the lineup full and the wave count high. However, the wet-season wind pattern becomes less reliable, especially in September and October when strong SW/WSW winds take over and put an onshore/sideshore texture on the surface. Surf quality is still there, but you have to pick your windows carefully and hunt for the NNW/NNE offshore breaks between tropical showers.

Low Surf Season (December - February)

December through February is the least consistent stretch of the year. Average wave periods drop to the 9-10.5s range, the swell mix becomes dominated by N/NNE/NNW windswell that is poorly aligned with the south-facing beach, and the percentage of ideal offshore wind falls to 20-24% in January and February. There are still rideable days, especially when a proper SSW groundswell lines up with a northerly breeze, but overall the surf tends to be shorter-period, more disorganized and less powerful than the March-July window. Water temperatures stay warm, but the combo of mixed swell directions and strong dry-season trade winds keeps the quality below the mid-year peak.
