April: Swell Builds, Wind Gets Fickle

April is where the trade-wind transition starts to muddy the picture. The average swell height climbs to 1m (3.3ft), and the swell spectrum becomes heavily concentrated in the SSE window-SSE makes up a remarkable 82.6 percent of the total, with the 1-1.5m (3.3-4.9ft) class accounting for 32.8 percent. That is real, rippable surf, and the 7.7s period keeps it punchy. SE and S swell add another 12 percent, making this the most focused south-southeast swell month so far.

The problem is the wind. Ideal conditions drop to 25 percent as the SE trade flow becomes the dominant morning-through-afternoon wind. ESE and SE winds alone account for 43 percent of the observations, and SSE/S winds add another 14.4 percent, putting most of the day onshore. Rainfall dips to 4.85mm/day, water temp cools slightly to 28.5°C, and air temps stay near 24.8°C. April is a month for watching the forecast and picking the rare NNW/NW window, or settling for bumpier, heavier waves in the trade-blasted late-season lineup.
