Welcome to Caballeros, a classic right-hand reef break perched at the northern tip of Punta Hermosa. This wave is a consistent performer, showing its best form during the winter months when south to southwest swells pulse into the bay. While it doesn't boast the hollower, faster drops of some neighboring breaks, Caballeros trades raw power for flow and longevity—offering surfers the promise of drawn-out lines that link together across an uneven reef. The wave here is a connoisseur's choice for intermediate surfers, thriving with swell in the 5- to 8-foot range (1.5 to 2.4 meters). When the conditions align—especially with an east wind grooming the face—the ride opens with a sucky spurt off the takeoff, then mellows into playful walls and shoulders before tightening into hollow sections on the inside. Tide-wise, mid to incoming is the sweet spot, but the break remains rideable at both extremes, so keep an eye on the tide tables for optimal timing. Getting in is straightforward: an open bay makes for easy paddling around the point. The local vibe is refreshingly mellow—provided you show respect for the beach and your fellow surfers. Crowds are rarely a grind, offering ample opportunities for a few waves without jostling for position, though weekends can see a notable uptick in the lineup. Always keep your wits about you, however—turning your back on the ocean here comes with its own set of risks.

Best Surf Season (May - September)

Caballeros is a classic west-southwest facing Peruvian corner, and it feels the full force of the Southern Ocean during the austral winter. From May through September the South Pacific storm track becomes more active, pushing average swell heights up to 1.9m (6ft) and maintaining 13-second periods. The swell window is overwhelmingly SSW and SW, with a secondary S swell component from June through August. This produces a steady diet of 1.5-2.5m (5-8ft) waves - statistically, around 76-78% of all observations fall in that juicy range. The catch is the wind. Southerly and southwesterly breezes dominate over 80% of the time, and clean offshore NE/ENE/E flow is rare (2-4% ideal wind). Your best bet is dawn patrol, when the thermal gradient is weakest and the surface is still glassy. If you get a morning with light E/NE wind and a long-period SSW swell, Caballeros is firing.
