Playa Norte

Playa Norte is a classic summer magnet, drawing weekend warriors up from Lima in droves. This lively beach break, framed by a mix of boulders and sand, delivers short, punchy rides that often favor bodyboarders. When conditions align, you can snag some decent turns, but be ready to share the lineup—especially on those bustling sunny days. The spot lights up with a southwest swell, though south and west pulses can also coax it to life. A 3-foot (0.9-metre) swell is the sweet spot, giving you a mix of lefts and rights. The north end tends to offer the better rights, especially when the push is on. Larger swells? Expect quick closeouts and brief, shallow barrels for those who time it right. The bottom is rocky, so keep your fins clear and watch your step. Intermediate surfers will feel most at home here. Beginners may find the rocks, urchins, and occasional shell hazards a bit daunting, plus the paddle out can get tricky when the surf picks up. East wind is your friend, and the beach works across all tides—low, mid, or high. For a more technical challenge, the nearby El Paso serves up powerful rights over boulders, though it’s a punishing trade-off if you blow the drop.

Best Surf Season (February - April)

During the late austral summer and early autumn, the South Pacific begins to transition, and the persistent southerly wind regime that plagues Playa Norte lets up just enough to reveal its true surf potential. Average swell heights sit between 1.5m and 1.7m (5-5.6ft) with long periods of 13.1-13.6 seconds, driven almost exclusively by SSW and SW ground swells. The percentage of ideal offshore winds from the N/NE peaks during this window, especially in March at 11%, offering the best chance for clean, well-groomed conditions on Playa Norte's west-southwest facing beach. Still, even the best months require a flexible approach - you will likely be reading the wind and picking your moments.
