January: Long-Period Summer Baseline

January is the heart of the Peruvian summer, and at Caballeros the Southern Ocean still delivers. The average swell height is 1.4m (4.5ft) with a 13.0-second period, putting it squarely in the long-period, powerful category despite the smaller size. Swell from the SSW dominates at 71%, with another 28% arriving from the SW - these are the ideal directions for the WSW-facing beach. The vast majority of waves fall in the 1-1.5m (3-5ft) range, and just under 40% push into the pumping 1.5-2.5m (5-8ft) range. That means plenty of rippable, fun-shaped waves rather than heavy winter slabs.

The wind story is less promising. S, SSW and SW winds combine for roughly 86% of the observations, with most blowing at 0-10kph. A pure S flow is sideshore, while SSW and SW are more directly onshore and will chop up the surface. Offshore NE/ENE/E winds are scarce, and the reported ideal wind is only 4% of the time. Morning offers the best chance for clean conditions before the coastal sea breeze builds. Water temperature is 19.0°C, air averages 20.6°C, and rainfall is essentially zero - classic dry desert summer.
