El Huayaco

Nestled near the mouth of a dry creek, El Huayaco delivers a surprisingly reliable mix of lefts and rights that appeals to the intermediate surfer. The main attraction is a 200-meter left point that peels over a boulder-strewn reef, offering tapered, ripable walls as the wave fans down the rocks. On the flip side, a shorter right provides punchy, fun rides with a blend of crumbly lips and, at the shallower sections, sucky, chandelier-like barrels that demand focus. Best with a west swell, the spot comes alive in smaller conditions—2 feet and up—and shines on low to mid tides for smoother, more forgiving faces. East winds are the call to keep things clean and lined up. While less intimidating than nearby heavyweights like Santa or Pena Rosa, El Huayaco isn't a solo affair. Consistency draws a crowd, especially when other points go quiet, so expect company in the water. The trade-off is a reef laced with boulders, rocks, and the occasional urchin, plus shifting currents that keep you on your toes. For intermediate surfers looking to sharpen their skills without the pressure of bigger, more treacherous waves, this spot offers solid, low-stress fun when the conditions align.

Best Surf Season (December - March)

El Huayaco's best chance of workable surf comes during the austral summer. Even though the average swell height drops slightly to 4-5ft (1.4-1.6m), the dominant SSW/SW groundswell still packs a punch with periods in the 12.8-13.5s range. Most importantly, the semi-permanent South Pacific High drifts farther south, the coastal pressure gradient relaxes, and the persistent S/SSW trades lose some of their bite. The only months with any meaningful percentage of ideal offshore flow are January, February, and March, with clean windows running 1-2 percent of the time. Those rare moments, combined with 19-20°C water and virtually zero rain, make this the prime window.
