Santa Rosa

Santa Rosa stands as a sentinel on the northern edge of the San Bartolo headland, a raw and powerful reef break that awakens when the Pacific sends west swells marching toward the coast. This is not a spot for the faint of heart: when the swell pushes past 5 feet (1.5 meters), the waves jack up abruptly from take-off, offering a fleeting tube section before crashing shut. The bottom here is a jigsaw of boulders, adding an element of consequence that demands respect and experience. The lineup dishes out a mix of lefts and rights, though the northwest swell tends to carve fast walls that stretch out along the reef. Mid tide provides the safest window for surfing, but the break can fire at various tidal stages depending on the swell’s energy. Paddling out can feel like a battle, especially on bigger days when currents sweep through the channel—this is a spot where local knowledge and solid fitness separate the curious from the committed. Consistency is medium, which means it’s worth a check when the forecast aligns, and crowds are generally sparse compared to more accessible breaks. Parking is available at the cabana de surfistas near the creek mouth, a natural staging point for the approach. Santa Rosa is best suited for intermediate surfers who can handle shifting conditions, a rocky bottom, and the unpredictable power of a wave that doesn’t wait for anyone.

Best Surf Season (January - March)

January through March is the pick of the year at Santa Rosa. During the austral summer, the South Pacific subtropical high settles farther south and loses some of its grip on the coast, allowing the persistent S/SSW wind machine to relax for a few precious hours at a time. Offshore flow from the NE, ENE, E and ESE occurs more often than at any other point on the calendar, and the long-period SSW/SW groundswell should be running in the 4-6ft (1.2-1.8m) range with 13-second intervals. Sea surface temperatures peak near 19-20C, so the water is comfortable and the waves are still full of power. It is never glassy all day, but these months offer the best ratio of clean surface to swell energy all year.
