June: The Habagat Full Effect

By June, the Southwest Monsoon is in full swing. Offshore S/SSW/SW/WSW wind conditions are common enough to keep the surface reasonably clean for 34 percent of the time, but the swell engine is running on fumes. Average swell height falls to just 2ft (0.6m) and the average period drops to its annual low of 8.6s. The wave rose is dominated by E (48.7 percent) and ENE (34.3 percent), with ESE and NNE filling in the margins. The E swell is outside Mabuntok's optimal window, so much of the energy misses or underperforms at the NNE-facing sandbars. What does arrive is mostly short-period windswell: playful on a foam board, but lacking real push. The monsoon also mixes SSE/SE winds with S/SW winds, so there are plenty of surface-texture variations but no reliable offshore/groundswell combination. Air temperature holds at 27.9°C, water warms to a tropical 29.6°C, and rain averages 7.3 mm/day. This is a month for summer skimming, not serious surfing.
