Best Surf Season (October - March)
Consolacao is a wholly different beast from October through March, when the North Atlantic powers back to life and generates consistent, heavy northwesterly swell. The average wave height climbs well above the 6ft mark and the periods regularly exceed 12 seconds, delivering powerful, well-organized lines to the west-northwest beach. This is the prime time to strike, especially when the semi-permanent Azores High weakens and an active low-pressure train rolls across the North Atlantic, spinning storm after storm toward the Iberian Peninsula. The ideal wind window also peaks during this period, with offshore flows present roughly 28 to 39 percent of the time depending on the month. Yes, winter brings plenty of rain and occasional frontal chaos, but for a surfer looking for size and power, this is the bullseye season.
Fair Surf Season (April, May & September)
The transition months offer a mixed bag. April holds onto remnants of the winter swell, averaging around 7ft with a still-respectable 11.2-second period, but the wind quality starts to erode as the Azores High expands and the northerly winds begin to dominate. May and September both feature clean surface potential on the right days, with average heights around 6ft and periods hovering near 10 seconds. The standout difference is consistency: instead of back-to-back lows, you get longer gaps between swells, but the peaks can still deliver fun, rippable waves when a rogue storm pushes energy in from the WNW or NW.
Low Surf Season (June - August)
Summer is the quiet time at Consolacao, and anyone hunting serious waves is usually disappointed. June, July, and August bring average swell heights down to 5ft, with periods dropping to a dismal 8.6-9.2 seconds. The swell is dominated by local windswell from the NNW and NW, which is a far cry from the long-period groundswell of winter. To make matters worse, the infamous nortada - the persistent north-northwest wind - ramps up massively, leaving the surface chopped and bumpy. Ideal offshore wind chances plummet to just 4-8 percent, meaning most days you are staring at onshore slop. It is the season to break out the single fin and enjoy the beach, but not to plan a surfcation.
