Best Surf Season (October - March)

Consolacao is a wholly different beast from October through March, when the North Atlantic powers back to life and generates consistent, heavy northwesterly swell. The average wave height climbs well above the 6ft mark and the periods regularly exceed 12 seconds, delivering powerful, well-organized lines to the west-northwest beach. This is the prime time to strike, especially when the semi-permanent Azores High weakens and an active low-pressure train rolls across the North Atlantic, spinning storm after storm toward the Iberian Peninsula. The ideal wind window also peaks during this period, with offshore flows present roughly 28 to 39 percent of the time depending on the month. Yes, winter brings plenty of rain and occasional frontal chaos, but for a surfer looking for size and power, this is the bullseye season.
