Espinho has long been one of northern Portugal’s most iconic surf destinations, offering a classic beachbreak that can be as fickle as it is rewarding. The real draw, however, is the standout right-hander peeling off the rocky groyne in front of the casino—locals call it Casino Right. This wave is a long, fast, and powerful right that can wall up, pitch into stand-up tubes, and finish over a shallow, rock-bottom section that demands respect. The main beach itself is a sand-bottom affair, but the groyne area adds the primary hazard, with shifting rocks and shallow water keeping things spicy. Beware the water quality, which suffers from a poor reputation due to nearby industrial factories—so keep a close eye on conditions and wash your gear well. Best on mid-to-high tide, with a clean swell from the northwest or west, and light offshore winds from the east or northeast. Intermediate to advanced surfers will find the most reward, especially when Casino Right is on.

Best Surf Season & Climatology

Best Surf Season (October - March)

Espinho is at its best when the North Atlantic winter engine is firing. From October through March, average swell heights climb to the 4-6ft (1.2-1.8m) range, while average periods run a powerful 11-13s, putting this west-facing stretch of the Portuguese coast squarely in the powerful, long-period category. Storm systems spinning out of the North Atlantic and the energetic zonal flow linked to a positive NAO phase tend to aim WNW and W swell into the coast. The added benefit is a higher frequency of clean, offshore winds, between 38% and 48% of observations per month, often from the northeast through east-southeast as high pressure builds over the Iberian Peninsula. The result is heavy, grinding, rippable surf with the potential for XL days when lows stall near the Bay of Biscay.
