Esposende's west-facing sandbars are made for the North Atlantic's winter mood. From October through March the mid-latitude storm track barrels toward Iberia, shoving the Azores High aside and sending long-period WNW and NW groundswell marching into the Portuguese coast. Average swell heights sit between 2.1m and 2.7m (7-9ft) and periods consistently hang in the 11-12.6 second range, meaning powerful, organised lines hitting the beach. The quality multiplier is the wind: winter setups frequently put the wind out of the east and southeast quadrant, giving Esposende clean, offshore mornings between frontal passages. December and January are the statistical peak, with ideal wind percentages around 52-53%. Throw in water temps that stay manageable at 13-17°C and you have the most reliable run of proper surf of the year.
