Best Surf Season (October - March)

Ofir's west-facing beach is entirely exposed to the North Atlantic, and from October through March it receives the full force of the mid-latitude storm track. As intense extratropical cyclones spin up off Newfoundland and race toward the Bay of Biscay, they send consistent, powerful swells out of the WNW and NW straight into the beach. Average surf heights hover between 2.1-2.7m (7-9ft) and periods often exceed 11-12 seconds, producing the kind of heavy, lined-up waves that make this stretch of the Portuguese coast so appealing. The cold season also brings the highest percentage of ideal wind - December alone is clean 53% of the time - because continental high pressure over Iberia funnels offshore ENE, E, ESE and SE winds across the break. This is the classic overwinter window for Ofir.
