Machico remains one of Madeira’s quieter, more elusive surf destinations—a spot that offers potential but demands a bit of local knowledge to unlock its best days. While no definitive data has been confirmed on preferred swell direction, optimal tide windows, prevailing winds, or typical wave size, the beach’s east-facing orientation suggests it could function best on a smaller, clean swell that wraps around the Ponta de São Lourenço. Access is straightforward via the main road through town, though facilities and parking can be limited. This is a spot best suited for intermediate surfers willing to read conditions on the fly and enjoy the serene, uncrowded lineup—when it decides to break.

Best Surf Season (October - March)

Surf forecasts on the Portuguese islands are written by the North Atlantic, and Machico is no exception. The autumn-to-spring window is the only time of year when the average swell height sits in the 2-2.6m (6.5-8.5ft) range and average periods stretch to 11.5-12.9s. These long-period waves carry the potential to wrap into Machico's SE-facing pocket, and the late autumn/winter months also produce the highest frequency of E/ESE/SE/SSE swell-small in absolute terms, but enough to turn a flat, shadowed bay into an actual surf spot. The catch is wind. Ideal offshore flow from the W/WNW/NW/NNW quadrant is present only 29-47% of the time, so you have to pick your windows, often in the wake of a cold front or when a strong Azores high-pressure ridge pushes storm tracks away from the island. Negative NAO phases in particular can help steer lows toward Madeira and raise the odds of a memorable SE groundswell. If December and January align, Machico delivers powerful, long-period waves with the Atlantic thumping behind them.
