Mindelo seasonal overview

Best Surf Season (October - March)

October through March is when Mindelo truly turns on. The North Atlantic storm track pushes a conveyor belt of extratropical cyclones toward the Iberian Peninsula, generating consistent W, WNW and NW groundswell with average heights of 6.9-8.9ft (2.1-2.7m) and periods of 11-13s. The North Atlantic Oscillation plays a big role here - during negative NAO phases, the storm track is pushed south toward Portugal, which typically means larger and more consistent W/WNW swells for Mindelo. This is also the time of year when the Azores High weakens enough to let cold fronts roll over Portugal, often setting up offshore flow from the NE through ESE. With ideal wind percentages between 39 and 48 percent, the beach sees its cleanest, most powerful surf.

Fair Surf Season (April - May & September)

These transitional months are a mixed bag. The ocean still produces plenty of NW/WNW swell, but average heights drop to 5.2-6.9ft (1.6-2.1m) and periods shorten to 10-11s. The wind regime becomes more northerly, with NNW winds taking over and cutting into the offshore flow. There are still clean sessions, especially when the swell tilts more W/WNW and morning E/NE flow kicks in, but you have to pick your windows.

Low Surf Season (June - August)

Summer is the low-season trade-off at Mindelo. The Azores High builds in and the Icelandic Low retreats, leaving the North Atlantic relatively quiet. Average swell heights drop to 4.6-4.9ft (1.4-1.5m), periods shrink to 8.6-9.2s, and the persistent summertime Nortada wind from the NNW/NW howls across the beach. With ideal wind only 16-19 percent of the time, the waves are small and bumpy - best left for the longboard or a dawn patrol and a lot of hope.
