Murtosa seasonal overview

Best Surf Season (November - February)

The North Atlantic engine is fully engaged through these months. Murtosa's west-northwest exposure lines up almost perfectly with the prevailing winter groundswell, while the average swell height runs 2.3-2.6m (7.5-8.5ft) and the average period sits in the powerful 11.8-12.8s band. Meanwhile, continental high pressure over Iberia and Europe favors offshore E/ESE winds, pushing the ideal-wind frequency to 44-50%. The result is consistently firing, well-groomed beachbreak waves, especially when the negative phase of the North Atlantic Oscillation steers low-pressure systems farther south and into prime swell-generating territory.

Fair Surf Season (March - April, September - October)

These shoulder months are a transitional battleground between the Azores High and the seasonal storm tracks. Swell size backs down to an average of 1.6-2.3m (5.2-7.5ft) and periods shorten, but the direction remains excellent, with WNW-NW swells still dominating the wave rose. The wind becomes less reliable as NNW sea breezes and synoptic north winds eat into the surface quality, dropping ideal-wind frequencies to 25-39%. Pick the windows with offshore E/SE flow or light mornings and there are still plenty of fun-to-solid waves to be found.

Low Surf Season (May - August)

Summer locks Murtosa into a holding pattern. The Azores High builds northward, the Atlantic storm track retreats, and average swell heights fall to 1.4-1.6m (4.6-5.2ft) with average periods of 8.5-9.8s. At the same time, the northerly wind machine kicks into gear: NNW winds reach 30-50% of all observations, creating a mix of short-period windswell and bumpy, onshore surf. The ideal-wind frequency drops to just 9-21%, so quality is marginal. Surfing is still possible, but this is the time to lower expectations and hunt for sandbars.
