Santa Cruz delivers classic beach break action over a sandy bottom, offering both lefts and rights scattered around town. The system of peaks along the town front provides plenty of playful potential on small to moderate swells, with enough variety to keep things interesting. However, those town peaks can get thick with summer crowds, so expect some company when the sun is out and the waves are up.

Best Surf Season (October - March)

Santa Cruz is at its finest from October through March, when the North Atlantic roars to life and unleashes consistent, powerful groundswell on this west-northwest facing stretch of the Portuguese coast. Average surf heights hover between 6.5 and 8.5ft (2.0-2.6m), with wave periods sitting comfortably in the 11-13s range. Deep extratropical cyclones tracking south of Iceland and into the Bay of Biscay drill W, WNW, NW and NNW energy straight into the beach, while the Azores High weakens enough to let frontal systems roll through. When the NAO index slips negative, storm tracks dip south and Santa Cruz sees even more frequent, better-angled NW swell. The percentage of clean, offshore wind days peaks in December (24%), January (23%) and November (21%), making this the window when the wave quality truly matches the size.
