Santa Cruz seasonal overview

Best Surf Season (October - March)

Santa Cruz is at its finest from October through March, when the North Atlantic roars to life and unleashes consistent, powerful groundswell on this west-northwest facing stretch of the Portuguese coast. Average surf heights hover between 6.5 and 8.5ft (2.0-2.6m), with wave periods sitting comfortably in the 11-13s range. Deep extratropical cyclones tracking south of Iceland and into the Bay of Biscay drill W, WNW, NW and NNW energy straight into the beach, while the Azores High weakens enough to let frontal systems roll through. When the NAO index slips negative, storm tracks dip south and Santa Cruz sees even more frequent, better-angled NW swell. The percentage of clean, offshore wind days peaks in December (24%), January (23%) and November (21%), making this the window when the wave quality truly matches the size.

Fair Surf Season (April - May and September)

The shoulder months of April, May and September offer a worthwhile trade-off. April still averages 6.6ft (2.0m) and September 5.2ft (1.6m) with periods around 10-11s, so there is plenty of push, but the wind becomes the limiting factor. Onshore NNW winds rule the afternoons and the percentage of ideal offshore flow drops to 9-11%. Early mornings, lighter winds and smaller, cleaner NW/NNW swell can produce fun, rippable waves on the inside sandbars, but you have to be out at first light before the summer northerly kicks in.

Low Surf Season (June - August)

Summer is the low season for Santa Cruz. Average swell height drops to 4.6-4.9ft (1.4-1.5m) and average periods retreat to 8.5-9.2s, leaving mostly short-period windswell rather than long-period groundswell. The swell is almost exclusively NNW/NW, which is the right direction but lacks the power to stand up on the exposed sandbars. To make matters worse, ideal wind is only 3-5% of the time; the thermal low over the Iberian Peninsula strengthens the north-northwest wind to 20-30kph on most afternoons, blowing the waves flat and ragged. If you have to surf, dawn patrol is the only realistic chance, and a foam board or longboard is the right weapon of choice.
