Best Surf Season (December - March)

Tavira is a southeast-facing Algarve beach, and its best waves arrive when the North Atlantic sends groundswell from the WSW/SW/SSW/S quadrant while a slack N-NNW flow blows offshore. That combination happens most often in deep winter. The statistics peak in January with the year's highest average period at 8.1 seconds and a 23% frequency of ideal offshore winds. December, meanwhile, offers the biggest overall swell heights, averaging 2-3ft (0.8-0.9m), with the most frequent pulses in the 5-8ft (1.5-2.5m) range. During negative NAO phases, the storm track shifts south toward Iberia and the Algarve consistently catches long-period southwesterly swell; during positive NAO phases, the best sessions often come from cut-off lows in the Gulf of Cadiz. The water is cool, around 15.5-17°C, but the sandbars and banks reshape and the punchy 8-second period produces some excellent, rideable surf.
