Best Surf Season (October - March)
Autumn and winter are when Tonel truly comes alive. As the North Atlantic storm track shifts south and the Icelandic Low deepens, low-pressure systems march toward the Iberian Peninsula, sending powerful groundswells from the W, WNW and SW into the west-facing Algarve. Average wave heights climb from 1.8m (6ft) in October to 2.4m (8ft) in December and January, with average periods sitting in the powerful 11-13s range. The percentage of ideal offshore wind also peaks during this window, generally between 20-26%, especially when high pressure over Spain and France sets up a clean E/NE flow. The storm track is sensitive to the NAO: negative phases often direct the most powerful lows toward Portugal, while positive phases favour northern Europe and leave the Algarve slightly smaller but still full of rideable swell.
Fair Surf Season (April - May & September)
The shoulder season is a game of windows. April still packs a punch with average swell around 1.9m (6ft) and a healthy 11.1s period, but the wind begins to clock more N and NNW as spring warms the continent. May sees wave heights ease to 1.6m (5ft) and periods drop to 9.8s, making conditions more inconsistent. September is the true wildcard of the year: the ocean is still warm at 19.3°C, the first Atlantic lows of autumn tickle the region, and W/NW swells start to clean up after the summer lull. These months reward flexible surfers who can pick the standout days and be early before the thermal wind kicks in.
Low Surf Season (June - August)
Summer is the quietest stretch at Tonel. The Azores High pumps up over the North Atlantic, the storm track retreats toward Iceland, and the Portuguese coast comes under the influence of strong thermal northerlies. Average swell heights drop to 1.4m (4-5ft) and periods shorten to 8-9s, meaning we are mostly dealing with local NW windswell and short-period NW/NNW pulses rather than ocean groundswell. The ideal offshore wind percentage falls to 7-9%, and the classic summer pattern of NNW winds at 20-40+kph makes it hard to find clean, groomed surf. June and August are a half-step better than July thanks to slightly longer periods and a bit more WNW swell, but overall, summer means small, bumpy and inconsistent.
