Best Surf Season (October - March)

Autumn and winter are when Tonel truly comes alive. As the North Atlantic storm track shifts south and the Icelandic Low deepens, low-pressure systems march toward the Iberian Peninsula, sending powerful groundswells from the W, WNW and SW into the west-facing Algarve. Average wave heights climb from 1.8m (6ft) in October to 2.4m (8ft) in December and January, with average periods sitting in the powerful 11-13s range. The percentage of ideal offshore wind also peaks during this window, generally between 20-26%, especially when high pressure over Spain and France sets up a clean E/NE flow. The storm track is sensitive to the NAO: negative phases often direct the most powerful lows toward Portugal, while positive phases favour northern Europe and leave the Algarve slightly smaller but still full of rideable swell.
