Zambujeira do Mar

Tucked away at the southern edge of the Alentejo coastline, Zambujeria do Mar is a classic seaside-town beach where the Atlantic meets a dramatic cliff-lined shore. A distinct left wedge peels off the cliffs at the southern end, offering a playful, sand-bottomed wave that can also break to the right when conditions align. It's a versatile, mellow beach break suited for a range of skill levels.

Best Surf Season (October - March)

The North Atlantic roars to life during October and the average surf height climbs dramatically along the Zambujeira coastline. October through March is the sweet spot, with average swell heights running 1.9-2.5m (6-8ft) and average periods 11.5-13.1s. Strong extratropical cyclones, especially when the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) is negative, send big, long-period WNW-to-NW groundswell straight into this west-facing beach. The percentage of ideal wind days peaks at 34-47%, and when high pressure builds over the Iberian Peninsula, the offshore flow through the ONO-O-SO quadrants strips the surface flat and clean. These are the months for serious surf, from solid head-high waves to double-overhead runners.
