Best Surf Season & Climatology
Best Surf Season (May - August)
May through August is when Betty's Bay lives up to its reputation. The austral winter sees the South Atlantic High shift far enough north to direct a relentless train of frontal systems through the Roaring Forties and into the Western Cape. Average swell heights climb from 8ft (2.5m) in May to over 9ft (2.8m) in June and July, with periods consistently in the powerful 12-13s range. At the same time, the wind regime flips hard towards NNW and NW, giving this southeast-facing coastline its most reliable offshore flow of the year. Ideal-wind percentages jump to 43-44%, and the combination of long-period S-to-WSW groundswell and clean offshore grooming is what makes this stretch fire.
