Betty's Bay seasonal overview

Best Surf Season (May - August)

May through August is when Betty's Bay lives up to its reputation. The austral winter sees the South Atlantic High shift far enough north to direct a relentless train of frontal systems through the Roaring Forties and into the Western Cape. Average swell heights climb from 8ft (2.5m) in May to over 9ft (2.8m) in June and July, with periods consistently in the powerful 12-13s range. At the same time, the wind regime flips hard towards NNW and NW, giving this southeast-facing coastline its most reliable offshore flow of the year. Ideal-wind percentages jump to 43-44%, and the combination of long-period S-to-WSW groundswell and clean offshore grooming is what makes this stretch fire.

Fair Surf Season (March - April, September - November)

The shoulder months are still very surfable, but less consistent. In March and April, summer trades are loosening their grip, the first strong autumn fronts are arriving, and the average swell sits between 7ft (2.2m) and 7.5ft (2.3m) with periods around 11.6-12.0s. September through November offers plenty of leftover winter groundswell - still averaging 7.5-8.5ft (2.3-2.6m) - but the returning ESE/SE trade wind makes clean windows more of a chase. When a cold front aligns a NW offshore breeze with a fresh S/SW swell, conditions can be excellent; just expect more variability than the heart of winter.

Low Surf Season (December - February)

Mid-summer is the most challenging stretch for consistently clean surf at Betty's Bay. Average swell heights remain surprisingly solid at around 7ft (2.1-2.2m) and periods hold near 11s, but the South Atlantic High locks in a dominant ESE/SE 'Cape Doctor' trade regime. Ideal offshore wind drops to just 18-21% of the time, and the abundant S-to-SW groundswell is often chopped up by afternoon cross/onshore breeze. These months are still worth chasing for dawn patrol barrels and pulsing groundswell, but you have to work much harder for the magic.
