Best Surf Season (April - September)

During the austral autumn and winter, the Southern Ocean storm track shifts north and repeatedly aims long-period groundswell at the Cape Peninsula. Cold fronts and cut-off lows ride the expanding westerly belt - especially when the Southern Annular Mode is negative - and send powerful SW and WSW swell towards Cape Town's NW-facing beach. April sees the highest ideal-wind percentage of the year at 40%, while May through September delivers the largest average swells, peaking around 9-10ft (2.7-3.0m) in July with 12.6 second periods. The dominant S/SW pulses wrap into the stretch, and post-frontal ESE/SE/SSE winds groom it into clean, powerful surf. It is the most consistent time of year, although raw frontal NW winds can still ruin days, so local knowledge is essential.

Fair Surf Season (March, October, November)

The fair windows are the transition months around the core winter season. March still averages 7-8ft (2.1-2.4m) with an 11.7s period and 34% ideal winds, while October and November give similar 7-8ft (2.1-2.4m) swells with periods of 11.3-11.6s and a growing southeasterly offshore flow. The South Atlantic high is starting to strengthen in spring, but the long-period S/SW groundswell is still wrapping in. These months offer a brilliant balance: fewer stormy onshore northwesterlies than mid-winter, yet still enough Southern Ocean energy to keep the beach well overhead.

Low Surf Season (December - February)

The relative low is early summer. December, January and February still average 7-8ft (2.1-2.4m) swells, but periods drop slightly to 11.1-11.3s and the ideal-wind ratio falls to 28%. The famous Cape Doctor - a strong SSE/SE wind - blows almost daily, and while it is offshore for this NW-facing beach, it often becomes too strong and bumpy by midday. The underlying SW groundswell remains solid, especially in the early morning glass-off windows. This is a low only by Cape Town standards: most coastlines would trade everything for a 6-8ft (1.8-2.4m) long-period groundswell with offshore winds.
