Elands Bay

Tucked away on a sandy riverbank in a quiet hamlet, Elands Bay is a haven for surfers chasing consistency without the crowds—though the lineup can tell a different story. The Point, the region’s crown jewel, demands a bit of patience, often biding its time until the perfect swell arrives to wake the reef. When conditions align, expect steep drops that pitch into fast, hollow walls, offering genuine tube rides that can rival more famous setups. Waves wrap across a kelp-draped reef before feathering out into a sandy section near the river mouth, creating a dynamic, multi-stage ride that rewards positioning and timing. This break thrives on a west swell, though southwest and northwest pulses also work their magic. It comes to life with swell heights around two feet (0.6 meters) and handles all tide ranges—low, mid, and high—with consistent shape. The wave peels left, and the preferred wind is a soul-cleansing southeast. While intermediate surfers will find plenty of fun here, experienced riders will savor the potential when the stars align: steep, barreling sections that demand quick reflexes. However, The Point can get crowded, with kiteboarders and longboarders mingling with the local crew. For variety, explore the consistent beach breaks to the north or hunt for right-handers on a nearby reef. Best Surf Season (May - September)

Elands Bay is fundamentally a winter wave. From May through September the South Atlantic storm track activates and sends consistent long-period groundswell from the SW/WSW quadrant into the exposed northwest-facing beach. Average wave heights jump from the summer baseline of around 1.2m (4ft) to 1.5-1.7m (5-5.6ft), with a healthy share of 1.5-2.5m (5-8ft) waves, especially in June and July. Periods hover in the 12-12.5s range, giving the bay real power and shape. Offshore wind windows from the S/SSW/SW quadrant are also at their most reliable, with ideal conditions 34-42% of the time. This is the heart of the surf season.
