Best Surf Season (May - September)

Elands Bay is fundamentally a winter wave. From May through September the South Atlantic storm track activates and sends consistent long-period groundswell from the SW/WSW quadrant into the exposed northwest-facing beach. Average wave heights jump from the summer baseline of around 1.2m (4ft) to 1.5-1.7m (5-5.6ft), with a healthy share of 1.5-2.5m (5-8ft) waves, especially in June and July. Periods hover in the 12-12.5s range, giving the bay real power and shape. Offshore wind windows from the S/SSW/SW quadrant are also at their most reliable, with ideal conditions 34-42% of the time. This is the heart of the surf season.

Fair Surf Season (April and October)

April and October are classic shoulder months. The storm tracks are transitioning, so Elands Bay still sees fun SW/WSW swells with average heights around 1.2-1.3m (4-4.3ft) and periods near 12s. The wind is still reasonably favorable, especially in April when ideal wind percentages reach the high 30s. These months are often the best balance between quality and crowd avoidance: enough background southwest swell to make the bay break, but less of the heavy winter thump. October can be particularly clean when high pressure settles over the interior and light offshore morning winds align.

Low Surf Season (November - March)

The summer months bring smaller, less consistent surf to Elands Bay. From November through March the seasonal high pressure ridge in the South Atlantic shifts poleward, the mid-latitude storm track weakens, and southwest groundswell becomes less frequent. Average wave heights drop to 1.2-1.3m (4ft), periods fall to the 11.5-11.9s range, and the percentage of ideal wind drops to 22-33%. Onshore and thermal summer wind can also add chop. That does not mean flat: there are still plenty of 3-5ft (1-1.5m) waves, especially when a rogue front sends a late-season SW pulse. It just means surfers need to pick the windows, not expect a full-on firing Elands Bay.
