Best Surf Season (May - August)

The South African coastline roars to life during late autumn and winter, and Flowrider is no exception. As the subtropical high drifts north and mid-latitude frontal systems march across the Southern Ocean, the average swell period jumps from around 8.9s in December to 10.8s by June. Combined with a high percentage of westerly offshore winds - ideal wind windows peak at 60 percent in June - the E/ESE groundswell that reaches this ESE-facing corner becomes cleaner, more powerful and far more rideable. Average swell heights hover in the 1.7-1.8m (5.5-6ft) range, with a solid mix of 3-6ft (1-2m) waves and regular overhead sets.

Fair Surf Season (March - April & September - October)

These shoulder months are transition periods, when the trade-wind regime is either losing or gaining strength. April still offers a respectable 40 percent ideal wind and a 10.0s average period, while March and September sit in the 9.6-9.8s range with 29-34 percent clean windows. Swell direction remains locked into the E/ESE/SE quadrant, so there is no shortage of waves; the only question is whether the morning glass will hold before afternoon northeast winds spoil the surface. On the right day, these months can deliver some of the best, least-crowded surf of the year.

Low Surf Season (November - February)

High summer is the most challenging period at Flowrider. The dominant NE/ENE trade winds blow into the beach, ideal offshore flow drops to just 18-23 percent of the time, and the average period falls back to 8.7-9.4s. Swell heights are still consistent at 1.6m (5.2ft), but the energy is mostly short-period windswell, which makes for lumpy, sectiony conditions. Still, when a tropical low or a late-season cold front pushes through and the wind swings west, the same stretch of coast can light up with surprising form - those are the windows worth chasing.
