Best Surf Season (December - March)

The South African summer gifts Humewood Pier its most consistent and surfable conditions. Offshore wind percentages peak at 28%, the sea hits a warm 19.6-20.4°C, and the mid-latitude high pressure system settles neatly to the west, funnelling light WSW-SW flow across the pier. The swell mix is dominated by SSW groundswell (27-29%) with a healthy secondary S component, producing average wave heights around 2m (6.5-6.6ft) and periods of 10.7-11.4s. These are not the huge winter pulses, but the quality is far higher because the wind is more frequently offshore and the water is pleasant. Morning sessions with a clean WSW breeze and 3ft of groomed face are the hallmark of this season.

Fair Surf Season (April - May, October - November)

Autumn and spring are transitional periods where the long-period swell engine starts to wake up, but the wind balance becomes more fickle. April and November still enjoy 25% ideal wind with wave heights averaging 2.1m (6.9ft) and periods building to 11.7s and 10.8s respectively. May and October see the first strong winter fronts, boosting average heights to 2.2m (7.2ft) and periods to 12.2s and 11.0s, yet ideal wind drops to 22-23%. The pier will have plenty of size and power, but the clean windows become more sporadic and the water temperature begins to slide (17.8-18.8°C).

Low Surf Season (June - September)

The southern winter is the swell climax for the Western Indian Ocean, with average heights climbing to 2.3-2.4m and periods peaking at 12.2-12.5s. However, this is also when the wind pattern turns hostile for the NNE-facing pier. North-west and north-northwest winds become prominent thanks to a succession of cold fronts, while ideal offshore wind drops to only 18-22%. The south-southwest and south-west groundswell is powerful and arguably too much for the pier's sheltered orientation, resulting in lumpy, windblown conditions with far fewer glistening surfaces. Only the occasional crisp WSW/SW offshore day, often after a front has passed, lets this winter juice become genuinely epic - but those are the exception, not the rule.
