Westbrook

Westbrook's surf year is controlled by a tug-of-war between Indian Ocean trade winds and Southern Hemisphere winter storms. This stretch of KwaZulu-Natal coast faces east-southeast, so it needs E/ESE/SE/SSE swell to wrap into the beach and west/northwest wind to groom the faces. The result is a classic seasonal ocean: summer brings plenty of swell direction but terrible wind, while winter delivers the full package.

Best Surf Season (May - August)

The Southern Hemisphere winter is prime time. Cold fronts and mid-latitude lows sweeping under the continent fire consistent S/SSE/SE groundswell, while high pressure over the interior creates westerly/north-westerly offshore flow. Average wave periods climb to 10.2-10.8s, heights hold at 5-6ft (1.5-1.8m), and ideal surfing wind blows 41-55% of the time. June and July are the standouts.
