Arenillas seasonal overview
Best Surf Season (October - March)
If you want Arenillas at its heaviest, this is your window. The North Atlantic storm track points directly at the Cantabrian Sea, sending consistent long-period northwesterly swells into the beach with an average size between 5ft and 7ft (1.5m and 2.0m) and periods often in the powerful 12-13s range. Southerly and southwesterly winds, driven by Atlantic lows and a negative phase of the NAO, blow offshore 38-42% of the time, setting up clean, lined-up surf on the better days. Water temperatures are cool but manageable, ranging from 12.6°C to 18.2°C, and the consistent swell is never far away. This is when Arenillas lives up to its potential.
Fair Surf Season (April - May and September)
As the ocean transitions between winter and summer, the surf drops down a notch but stays active. April and May see average heights fading from 4-5ft (1.4m) to 3-4ft (1.1m) with periods slipping from 10.9s to 10.0s, while September sees the autumn renewal begin, with 4ft (1.2m) waves and 10.4s periods. Northwesterly swells still dominate, but the window for clean offshore wind shrinks to 30-32% as high pressure and thermal easterlies become more common. Smaller, more playful days are the norm, and a few autumn swells start to show in late September.
Low Surf Season (June - August)
Summer is the quiet period at Arenillas. The Azores High bulges north and the Atlantic storm track retreats to high latitudes, leaving an average swell height of 3ft (0.9-1.0m) and a period of just 8.9-9.3s. Northwesterly groundswell occasionally sneaks in, but it is often weak and short-period. Worse, the prevailing thermal wind pattern becomes easterly and northeasterly, which is onshore and tends to chop things up. The percentage of ideal wind drops to just 22-24%. It is still possible to find clean, small waves in the morning before the sea breeze kicks in, but this is not the time for a serious swell-chaser.
