Today's Surf Conditions at El Confital
Spot Overview & Description
El Confital on Tenerife’s exposed south coast is a pulsing, fast-moving lefthander that detonates over an uneven, shallow reef. This is a raw, barreling wave built for seasoned surfers only—its hollow, critical sections demand precision, commitment, and a healthy respect for its unpredictability. The reef’s irregular bottom creates a shifting lineup and challenging takeoff, making it a true test of skill for those who paddle out.
Best Surf Season & Climatology
El Confital is a selective, south-facing stretch of Atlantic reef on the eastern edge of the Canary Islands. The year is a tug-of-war between the North Atlantic storm track and the Azores High. During the winter half of the year, low-pressure systems regularly march toward the archipelago, spinning up long-period groundswell. The summer half is dominated by NE trade winds and high pressure, which keep conditions visually clean but starve the coast of power. The North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) is the big controller: when it turns negative, the storm track sags south and El Confital gets into the firing line; when it is positive, the best storms miss to the north and the spot is left waiting on small northern windswell.
Best Surf Season (October - March)
The North Atlantic roars to life between October and March. Average swells sit near 4ft (1.2-1.3m) and, more importantly, the average period climbs into the 11.6-12.3s range -- a powerful long-period window. The S/SW quadrant is never dominant in the raw data, but these are the months when Atlantic lows can set up far enough south to send the right direction of groundswell into El Confital's south-facing reef. The chance of a pumping S/SW swell at 5-8ft (1.5-2.4m) with offshore N/NNE winds is much higher from October through March.
