January: Deep-Winter Groundswell

January delivers the most powerful average conditions of the year at El Confital. The swell height averages 4ft (1.3m), and the average period of 12.3s puts the surf squarely in the powerful long-period category. The wave rose is heavily loaded toward the north: NNW contributes 33%, NNE 18.1%, NW 15% and N 10.4%. For a south-facing set-up, those northern signals do most of their damage as background energy, often arriving shadowed or wrapped. The swell that truly works comes from S/SW; January only logs around 2% of observations from that quadrant, which means quality windows are limited. But when a deep Atlantic depression slips south of the Azores, January can produce 4-8ft (1.2-2.4m) S/SW groundswell with intervals well into the long-period range, and that is when El Confital jumps onto the radar.

Wind is generally clean. NE winds lead with 35.2%, followed by ENE at 21.8%, creating a predominantly cross-offshore texture; onshore S/SW winds account for only about 9%. The wind is ideal 50% of the time, which is enough to keep the wave faces groomed between storm pulses. With an average air temperature of 18.2°C (14.6-23.2°C), water temperature of 19.8°C and precipitation near 0.94 mm/day, January is comfortable and occasionally wet, but the main story is the first big long-period swells of the calendar year.
