Meñakoz stands as a world-class, heavy-water colossus, widely regarded as one of the most fearsome and regularly surfed big-wave reefs in all of Europe. This deep-water right-hander unloads over an uneven, jagged rock bottom, set within a stunning natural amphitheatre that offers a front-row seat to the raw power on display. Don't let the beauty fool you—this wave is a serious, mercurial beast. Shifting peaks, a treacherous inside ledge, and relentless rips demand full respect. Two-wave hold-downs, shattered boards, broken bones, and the real risk of bouncing off the bottom are all part of the contract here. Only the boldest, fittest, and most prepared should even think of paddling out.

Best Surf Season & Climatology

Best Surf Season (October - March)

The heart of the northern winter is the prime time for Mekakoz. As the North Atlantic basin turns hyperactive, powerful low pressure systems march eastwards and generate long period NW and WNW swells that line up perfectly with the beach's north-west exposure. Average wave heights climb through the 5-7ft (1.5-2.1m) range with periods between 11 and 13 seconds, putting this stretch of the Spanish coast on the map for serious winter sessions. With the Azores High often displaced south or west, the pressure gradient tightens, and we see frequent frontal passages. The key is to sit out the storm fronts and grab the windows of S/SW offshore flow that groom the swell into clean shapes. Ideal wind frequencies peak at 30-38% during this season, and water temperatures between 12.6 and 14.0°C (54.7-57.2°F) warrant a solid wetsuit. This is the most consistent, powerful and hollow period of the year at Mekakoz.
