Sopelana

Sopelana is a remarkably consistent beachbreak that stretches along a dynamic stretch of coastline, offering multiple peaks such as Atxibiribil and Arrietara. The waves break over shifting sandbanks interwoven with fingers of reef, delivering both lefts and rights that race across the beach. At the western end, a reliable high-tide peak stands out, while La Triangular at La Salvaje presents a distinct rocky reef shelf known for producing clean, well-defined rights and lefts.

Best Surf Season (October - March)

The winter months are the crown jewel for Sopelana. As high-latitude cyclones spin up across the North Atlantic, consistent groundswell trains march toward the Bay of Biscay with average heights around 1.8-2.1m (6-7ft) and periods routinely pushing 12-13s. The dominant NW-WNW swell window aligns perfectly with the beach's NW exposure, while S to WSW winds blow offshore and keep the lines clean. October is a standout with 38% ideal winds, but December and January bring the heaviest, most powerful waves of the year.
