Sopelana seasonal overview
Best Surf Season (October - March)
The winter months are the crown jewel for Sopelana. As high-latitude cyclones spin up across the North Atlantic, consistent groundswell trains march toward the Bay of Biscay with average heights around 1.8-2.1m (6-7ft) and periods routinely pushing 12-13s. The dominant NW-WNW swell window aligns perfectly with the beach's NW exposure, while S to WSW winds blow offshore and keep the lines clean. October is a standout with 38% ideal winds, but December and January bring the heaviest, most powerful waves of the year.
Fair Surf Season (April, May and September)
As the ocean transitions between winter and summer, the North Atlantic still delivers periodic pulses. April and May see average heights of 1.2-1.4m (4-5ft) with periods of 10-11s, while September often experiences more organized long-period groundswell with 35% ideal winds and cleaner conditions. This is a good shoulder-period compromise: fewer stormy days, but still plenty of rideable waves and warmer water.
Low Surf Season (June - August)
The summer months are the quietest time at Sopelana. Average heights drop to 1.0m (3ft) and average periods shrink below 9.5s as the storm tracks migrate northward. The swell is overwhelmingly NW but smaller, and the prevailing N/NE winds are largely onshore to cross-offshore, making conditions mushy and less consistent. Mornings with light offshore breezes are your best bet, but consistent quality surfing is hard to come by until autumn.
