Playa de Famara

Playa de Famara unfurls as a sweeping crescent of dark volcanic sand, stretching over six kilometers from the village and facing northwest into the open Atlantic. This dynamic beach break offers both lefts and rights peeling over a sandy bottom, with a reef shelf lurking near the village that can add extra texture to the lineup. The center of the bay is the focal point for swell, soaking up the most energy and delivering consistent waves across a range of conditions. Closer to Famara village, the waves tend to be smaller and more forgiving—ideal for dialing in technique. Head north, and the breaks become faster and more critical, with low tide often coaxing out hollow, pitching sections. The southern end, by contrast, is generally softer and more mellow, offering a more relaxed, user-friendly experience for those looking to log easy rides without the intensity of the northern peaks.

Best Surf Season (October - March)

The North Atlantic roars back to life from October through March, and Playa de Famara feels every bit of it. This is when long-period groundswell from the NW, NNW and N quadrant lines up beautifully with the beach's north-northwest exposure. Average wave heights climb to 1.5-1.7m (5-5.6ft) and average periods jump into the 11-13s range, bringing the kind of powerful, organized swell that makes this stretch of Lanzarote's north coast shine. The catch is always wind: the NE trades still blow on many days, but the percentage of true offshore S-SSW wind windows peaks during these months, especially in December when ideal conditions reach 15 percent. When a strong high-pressure ridge sets up over Iberia and a low spins in the North Atlantic, Famara can produce firing, rippable waves from the northern sandbar all the way down to La Santa.
