Best Surf Season (October - March)
The North Atlantic roars back to life from October through March, and Playa de Famara feels every bit of it. This is when long-period groundswell from the NW, NNW and N quadrant lines up beautifully with the beach's north-northwest exposure. Average wave heights climb to 1.5-1.7m (5-5.6ft) and average periods jump into the 11-13s range, bringing the kind of powerful, organized swell that makes this stretch of Lanzarote's north coast shine. The catch is always wind: the NE trades still blow on many days, but the percentage of true offshore S-SSW wind windows peaks during these months, especially in December when ideal conditions reach 15 percent. When a strong high-pressure ridge sets up over Iberia and a low spins in the North Atlantic, Famara can produce firing, rippable waves from the northern sandbar all the way down to La Santa.
Fair Surf Season (April - May and September)
April and May sit firmly in the shoulder zone. The swell direction stays usefully in the N-NNW window, but the average period drops to 9-10.6s, and the strengthening trades eat into surface quality. You can still score clean 3-5ft (0.9-1.5m) waves early in the morning before the onshore seabreeze cranks. September is the mirror image, with late-season warmth, water temperatures near 22.7°C and the first pulses of renewed Atlantic storm activity showing up in the 9.5s average period. It is a transition month where one good N-NNW groundswell can remind you that winter is just around the corner, but consistency is still poor.
Low Surf Season (June - August)
June, July and August mark the low point for surf quality at Famara. The average period shrinks to a windswell-like 7.3-8.1s, and the dominant NNE trade wind blows 60 percent or more of the time. Even though the swell rose shows plenty of N and NNE energy at 1-1.5m (3-5ft), it is almost always accompanied by strong onshore/cross-onshore winds that chop the surf out. Ideal offshore wind windows drop to zero percent in July and August. This is the time for flat-calm dawn patrols, longboard grovels, and appreciating the warm 20-21.8°C water rather than expecting epic waves.
