Best Surf Season (October - March)
The North Atlantic is fully awake during these months, with the Icelandic Low pulling a relentless train of extratropical cyclones across the Bay of Biscay. Tapia de Casariego faces straight into the north-northwest, so the dominant northwest and north-northwest swells roll in with minimal refraction, delivering the most consistent and powerful surf of the year. Average swell heights hover between 5-6ft (1.5-1.8m) with periods of 11 to 12.5 seconds - powerful, long-period groundswell. The percentage of offshore winds (from the S, SSW, SW and WSW quadrants) peaks at 50% or more from October through January. Water temps are still workable with a good wetsuit, and the storms that bring the waves also bring rain and cool air - but the payoff is epic, clean, pumping beach peaks.
Fair Surf Season (April - May, September)
As the Atlantic storm track begins to wobble northward in spring, and before it fully re-engages in autumn, Tapia enters a transitional phase. Average swell heights drop to 3-4ft (0.9-1.3m), periods shorten to 9.7-10.5 seconds (average, punchy, rideable), and the Azores High starts to exert its influence, often parking a ridge over the region. The swell is still predominantly from the NW and NNW - a blessing for this exposed beach - but the energy is less consistent and the percentage of clean offshore wind days falls to the 30-40% range. On the bright side, lighter winds and warmer weather make these months more user-friendly for loggers and funboard riders.
Low Surf Season (June - August)
Summer at Tapia is the classic lull - the North Atlantic subtropical high takes full control, storm tracks retreat to the high latitudes, and the average swell height bottoms out at 2.5-3ft (0.8-0.9m). Periods sink to 8.5-8.9 seconds, which means choppy, low, messy windswell rather than groundswell. Worse, the prevailing NE trade winds blow directly onshore at this exposed north-northwest-facing beach, making conditions frequently bumpy. The ideal wind percentage drops to just 21-25%. Still, small waves can be found on the rare days when a late-season tropical storm sends a pulse of north swell, or early in the morning before the sea breeze kicks up.
