Tapia de Casariego

Tapia delivers a consistently reliable beachbreak experience, with a sand bottom that produces both lefts and rights. A semi-permanent hollow lefthander, fed by a nearby stream, often steals the show with its steep, pitching sections. This is a high-quality wave that draws a crowd—and for good reason. It’s a frequent contest venue and a local favorite, so expect company, especially on clean swells. When Tapia’s firing and the lineup is packed, the small-swell refuge of La Paloma sits just west of town, offering a more manageable alternative.

Best Surf Season (October - March)

The North Atlantic is fully awake during these months, with the Icelandic Low pulling a relentless train of extratropical cyclones across the Bay of Biscay. Tapia de Casariego faces straight into the north-northwest, so the dominant northwest and north-northwest swells roll in with minimal refraction, delivering the most consistent and powerful surf of the year. Average swell heights hover between 5-6ft (1.5-1.8m) with periods of 11 to 12.5 seconds - powerful, long-period groundswell. The percentage of offshore winds (from the S, SSW, SW and WSW quadrants) peaks at 50% or more from October through January. Water temps are still workable with a good wetsuit, and the storms that bring the waves also bring rain and cool air - but the payoff is epic, clean, pumping beach peaks.
