Taapuna seasonal overview

Best Surf Season (December - February)

Taapuna's best months line up with the peak of the South Pacific wet season, when the wave rose shows the most balanced mix of W, WSW, WNW and NW energy. Average swell heights sit near 5-6ft (1.7-1.8m) with a powerful long-period average around 12.6-12.9s, while the trade-wind machine supplies clean offshore flow from the NE, ENE, E and ESE a large percentage of the time. This is the sweet spot for the west-facing reef, with warm 28-29°C water, tropical showers and occasional cyclone-born swells that can push the reef into firing mode.

Fair Surf Season (March - May / October - November)

During the shoulder seasons, the prevailing swell direction shifts steadily into the southern quadrant. Southeast, south and south-southwest swells dominate the wave rose, so Taapuna becomes more direction-dependent. The surf can still average 6ft (1.8m) or more, and the offshore winds remain a positive in March, April and November. But quality depends entirely on how much SW-W-WNW influence wraps into the mix. When it does, and the E/ESE trades are light, Taapuna still offers excellent, powerful waves.

Low Surf Season (June - September)

This is the heart of the southern winter, and while the ocean is far from flat, Taapuna's quality takes a clear hit. Average swell sizes are often the biggest of the year at 6-7ft (2.0m), but the direction becomes stubbornly SSE-S-SSW, well off-axis for a west-facing set-up. At the same time, the southeast trade winds strengthen, with 20-40kph pulses common, and the ideal surfing wind window drops to only 24-27 percent. The result is a season of heavy, raw, less organized surf that is more difficult to surf well than the polished glassy waves of the summer season.
