This freight train of a wave unloads over a live coral reef, serving up long, hollow walls that demand respect and reward precision. At its best—head-high to a daunting quadruple overhead—it’s a true performance wave for shortboarders who have the chops to handle its speed and power. The magic happens on a solid southwest swell, though south and northwest pulses can also fire it up. You’ll want an east wind to keep the faces clean and glassy, and nearly any tide will work, though the wave’s shape shifts subtly from low to high. Expect a crowd that mirrors the wave’s intensity: local surfers pack the lineup, especially during prime season, and the vibe can turn icy if you don’t show proper respect. The paddle from shore is a 20-minute haul, or you can opt for a boat drop to save energy. Below the surface, live coral is the main hazard—reef rash and cuts are part of the deal. Sharks patrol the deeper channels occasionally, adding a layer of adrenaline. Best Surf Season (December - February)

Taapuna's best months line up with the peak of the South Pacific wet season, when the wave rose shows the most balanced mix of W, WSW, WNW and NW energy. Average swell heights sit near 5-6ft (1.7-1.8m) with a powerful long-period average around 12.6-12.9s, while the trade-wind machine supplies clean offshore flow from the NE, ENE, E and ESE a large percentage of the time. This is the sweet spot for the west-facing reef, with warm 28-29°C water, tropical showers and occasional cyclone-born swells that can push the reef into firing mode.
