Tucked away on the remote Iti Peninsula, Vairao delivers a uniquely mellow alternative to Tahiti’s fearsome lineup. While Teahupo’o commands the headlines, this left-hander offers a more forgiving path to barrel perfection—smooth, fast, and remarkably clean, with a distinctly uncrowded vibe. The trade-off is a proper mission: expect a 20-minute paddle from shore or a quick boat ride to reach this isolated reef. The wave itself is a steep, accelerating left that wraps over live coral, rewarding confident surfers with deep, rideable barrels. When a south or southeast swell fills in between 4 and 12 feet, the take-off stands up with precision, favoring medium to high tides and northeast winds to shape its best walls. From the drop, you can link several hundred yards of open face before the wave funnels into a dramatic final bowl section at the reef pass—a true test of timing and line. This is strictly expert territory, best tackled on a shortboard with reef awareness front of mind. The paddle out is moderate, but the reward is a long, draining wave in a setting that feels worlds away from the madness elsewhere on the island. Prime season runs from March through September, when winter and autumn swells align to bring Vairao to life.

Best Surf Season (December - March)

The heart of Vairao's year comes during the austral summer and early autumn. Between December and March, the South Pacific's trade wind belt is strongest, keeping the west-facing reef clean with NE-ESE offshore breezes 35-41% of the time. The swell rose shows that while south energy is still present, the share of SW, WSW, W and WNW swell-the directions that actually hit Vairao best-is at its annual peak, especially in December, January and February. Average wave heights run a solid 5-6ft (1.5-1.8m) on 11.4-12.6s periods, and the warmest water of the year (28-29°C) makes for a classic tropical surf experience.
