Best Surf Season (December - March)

The heart of Vairao's year comes during the austral summer and early autumn. Between December and March, the South Pacific's trade wind belt is strongest, keeping the west-facing reef clean with NE-ESE offshore breezes 35-41% of the time. The swell rose shows that while south energy is still present, the share of SW, WSW, W and WNW swell-the directions that actually hit Vairao best-is at its annual peak, especially in December, January and February. Average wave heights run a solid 5-6ft (1.5-1.8m) on 11.4-12.6s periods, and the warmest water of the year (28-29°C) makes for a classic tropical surf experience.

Fair Surf Season (April - May, October - November)

These are the shoulder months at Vairao, when the South Pacific winter storm track is either ramping up or winding down. April and May see bigger average swells (2.1-2.2m / 7ft) with 12.9s periods, but the energy comes predominantly from S, SSE and SE-directions that this west-facing spot struggles to convert into quality waves. October and November, by contrast, offer improving winds and warmer water but still lack the westerly swell angle. If you pick the right SW-window day in these months, you can score; just know that consistency is low.

Low Surf Season (June - September)

Midwinter in the South Pacific brings the largest open-ocean surf of the year, with averages of 7-8ft (2.1-2.3m) and 12.2-12.6s periods. But for Vairao, this is the least productive time. The swell direction is anchored in the S/SSE/SE quadrant, which leaves the west-facing break shadowed and indifferent, while stronger E/ESE trade winds drive ideal-surf numbers down to just 25-29%. If you're chasing size at any cost, the islands' southern reefs are the place; if you're chasing Vairao at its best, wait for the seasonal worm to turn.
