January is the heart of Fistral's heavy season. The average swell sits near 2.2m (7ft) with a powerful 12.1s period, and the W and WNW directions dominate, with W alone supplying over 34% of the total swell. These are long-period groundswells generated by the relentless train of mid-Atlantic lows that strengthen when the NAO turns positive. With the beach facing west-northwest, the swell lines unload with real authority, and anything in the 2-2.5m range turns into a solid, grunty beach break. The catch is the wind: southwesterly and westerly winds together make up the largest wind quadrant, and onshore W and NW flow is present about 29% of the time. Still, the 23% ideal window usually arrives when high pressure builds over Scandinavia or the continent, pulling east and southeast winds across the bay. Air temperatures average a chilly 7.8°C and the water is 9.7°C, so the call is full rubber and a sharp eye on the synoptic charts.
