November: Building Winter Swell

November solidifies the winter regime. Average height is back up to 4-5ft (1.2-1.5m) with an average period of 7.2s, as the North Atlantic storm track deepens. The swell rose is more mixed than October: E at 9.8%, S at 9.9%, ESE and SE both 8.7%, SSE 8.4% and SSW 7.5%. The E/SE quadrant still accounts for a healthy slice of the wave climate, but westerly and northwesterly swells also become more common as stronger lows spin up off the coast.

Wind is the big draw. WNW winds lead the rose at 13.2%, with W at 10.1%, NW at 10.9% and NNW at 10.7%, making offshore flow frequent and often strong. Ideal surf conditions clock in around 32%. Water temperature falls to 13.4°C and air temperature averages 7.9°C, so full wetsuits return. November serves up powerful, cold, clean surf for surfers willing to brave the elements.
