Flagler Beach seasonal overview

Best Surf Season (October - March)

Flagler Beach is an east-northeast-facing beach that needs swell from the NNE, NE, ENE and E quadrant, combined with offshore west-quarter winds, to really fire. That combination lines up best from October through March, when the North Atlantic storm track cranks back up and cold fronts march across the Southeast U.S. The average surf height sits around 2ft (0.6-0.8m) during this period, but more importantly the percentage of favorable wind days jumps into the 22-30% range. Nor'easters spinning off the Carolinas push powerful NE-ENE swell directly into Flagler, and when the wind clocks into the SSW-SW-WSW-W quadrant, the beach serves up clean, rippable lines.

Fair Surf Season (April - May & September)

As winter loosens its grip, April and May see the Atlantic high pressure system begin to strengthen. Swell directions shift increasingly to the E and ESE, reducing quality along this ENE-facing stretch. Still, late-season cold fronts and early-season tropical activity can deliver fun, punchy 3-4ft (0.9-1.2m) waves on the right wind day. September is the wildcard: the average period peaks near 9s, and the developing tropical season can throw large, long-period ENE-E swell into the coast - if the wind cooperates.

Low Surf Season (June - August)

Summer is the most frustrating stretch at Flagler Beach. The subtropical high locks in, the prevailing wind turns ESE-SE, and the swell window shrinks dramatically. Average wave heights drop to 0.4-0.5m (1.3-1.6ft) while the percentage of ideal wind days bottoms out at just 7-8%. The summer heat and 27-28°C (81-82°F) water are nice for a swim, but surfers will be groveling on micro, wind-chopped waves unless a tropical storm rudely interrupts the calm.
