Haleiwa, the iconic right-hand reef break at Ali'i Beach Park, sits at the heart of the North Shore's commercial center, blending local charm with world-class waves. On smaller days, it can appear deceptively mellow, with soft, broken peaks that beckon the unwary. But let the swell rise—an overhead west-to-northwest pulse transforms this reef into a relentless, high-performance beast. Expect fast, slabbing walls, hollow sections that demand precision, and a notorious shallow inside shutdown known as the Toilet Bowl. This is a wave that rewards respect and punishes hesitation, suited for experienced surfers who thrive on power and consequence.

Best Surf Season & Climatology

Best Surf Season (November - March)

The North Pacific roars to life in November and Haleiwa, with its north-northwest exposure, is one of the first North Shore breaks to feel the full force of winter. An active Aleutian low and a relentless train of extratropical cyclones send long-period NNW, NW, and N swells marching toward Oahu. Average swell heights peak at around 9ft (2.7m) and periods stretch into the 11-13s range, producing the powerful, hollow and genuinely heavy conditions that made this beach famous. When cold fronts push through and the wind flips into the S/SW quadrant, Haleiwa turns glassy and barreling. This is the classic Hawaiian winter window and the clear go-to season.
