The beach is easily accessed right off the coast road, making it a magnet for those in the know. The break fires best with northeast swell, though it also handles northwest and east pulses, handling anywhere from 4 to 12 feet. At its core, Middles is a fast, hollow right that peels over an uneven reef—ideal for shortboarders and bodyboarders alike, but best left to intermediate skill levels due to its steep drops and shallow exit. Tide plays a key role: higher water, especially during fall and winter, adds intensity and makes the tube more defined, while lower tides can expose the reef and its hazards, including urchins. The best surf of the year at Middles arrives when autumn and winter synoptic systems start to assert themselves across the North Atlantic. As low pressure centers deepen and cold fronts push farther south, the average swell size climbs to 1.7-1.9m (5.6-6.2ft) and periods build to the 9.6-9.8s range. More importantly, the swell direction begins to rotate into the northern quadrants - N, NNE, NE, and NNW - which are the money angles for this almost north-facing beach. October is the real turning point: ideal wind conditions peak at 34% as the trade wind regime starts to weaken and south/southwest offshore flow becomes more frequent. From November through March, the winter swell machine is in full swing, and when the wind direction aligns, Middles can deliver powerful, well-structured waves.
